AIMS
OF THE ASSOCIATION
The
aim of the Association is to foster the development of the scout Movement
throughout the Republic of Ethiopia by:
a)
Contributing to the development pf young people in achieving their full
physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual potentials as
individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national
and international communities.
b) The Ethiopia scout Association’s ultimate goal is to contribute
in building and molding character of Ethiopia youth in order to make them
c) Grow into citizens who care for their country, people who are active
and happy to engage in national building.
d) As a member of the world wide movement of scouting, the Association
shares its Mission, Aim, Fundamental principles and Method as stated below.
The Scout Movement
Definition
The Scout Movement is a voluntary, non-political
educational movement for
Young people open to all without distinction of origin, race of creed
or creed, in
Accordance with the mission statement below.
Mission Statement
The
mission of Scouting is to contribute to the education of young people,
through a value system based on the scout promise and Law, to help build
a better world where people are self fulfilled as individuals and play
a constructive role in society.
This
is achieved by:
I.
Involving them throughout their formative years in anon-formal educational
process,
II. Using a specific method that makes each individual the principal agent
in his or her own development as a self-reliant, supportive, responsible
and committed person, and
III. Assisting them to establish a value system based upon spiritual,
social and personal principles as expressed in the promise and Law.
Principles
The
scout Movement in based on the following principles:
(a)
Duty to God
Adherence to spiritual principles, loyalty to the religion that expresses
them and acceptance of the duties resulting there from, and respect for
other people’s faiths.
(b)
Duty to others
Loyalty to one’s country in harmony with the promotion of local,
national and international peace, understanding and co-operation, participation
in the development of society with recognition and respect for the dignity
of one’s fellow man and for the integrity of the natural world.
(c)
Duty to self
Responsibility for the development of oneself and active participation
in one’s entire personal development
(d)
Adherence to a promise and law
All
members of the Scout Movement are required to adhere to a Scout promise
and Law appropriate to their section.
(i) The Cub Scout promise
‘
I promise that I will do my Country,
to do my Duty to god and my Country,
to keep the Law of the Cub Scouts and to help somebody everyday”
(ii)
The Scout promise (for all other sections and for adults)
‘ On my honor, i promise that I will do my best
to do my Duty to God and my Country.
to help other people at all times,
and to obey the Scout law.
(iii) The Tadagi (Cub) Scout Law
1- A Tadagi Scout obeys elders,
2- A Tadagi Scout tries hard.
(iv)
The Scout Law for Medebegna, Wotat, Awaki,
Golmassa and all the Scout Leaders:

A Scout’s honor is to be trusted
2. A Scout’s is loyal,
3. A Scout is helpful,
4. A Scout is friendly,
5. A Scout is respectful and kind,
6. A Scout cares for Nature,
7. A Scout is obedient,
8. A Scout is cheerful and courageous,
9. A Scout is thrifty,
10. A Scout is clean in though, word, gody and deed.
The Scout Method
The
Scout Method is a System of progressive self-education through:
•
A promise and law
• Learning by doing
• Membership of small groups ( for example the patrol). involving,
under adult guidance, progressive discovery and acceptance of responsibility
and training towards self-government directed towards the development
of character, and the acquisition of competence, self-reliance, dependability
and capacities both to co-operate and to lead. progressive and stimulating
programs of varied activities based on the interests of the participants,
including games, useful skills, and services tot he community, taking
place largely in an outdoor setting in contact with Nature.
Membership
of the World Organization of the Scout Movement
The
Association is the only National Scout organization in Ethiopia and accordingly
agrees to adhere to the Constitution of the word Organization of the Scout
Movement.
It will be run in accordance with the principles of democracy, and will
accept all decisions of the world Scout conference.
